For Respect All Music Guide Rare is the rock band that can make a strong impression on the listener without the benefit of a vocalist, but Pittsburgh's Don Caballero comes roaring out of the gate on its debut album. Trouser Press Don Caballero use ingenuity, muscle and a precise sense of rhythmic possibilities to easily sustain excitement for all 38 nearly wordless minutes of For Respect. Guitarists Mike Banfield and Ian Williams play at maximum levels of strength and creativity, and the acrobatic drumming of Damon Che is frequently highlight-reel material. Punk Rock Academy I'm thinking it might be fun to tape this "Mean Man's Dream" by Gore on the other side and take acid and drive up and down Palomar Mountain with it blaring out the windows and I'll turn off my headlights and cross my eyes and - naw, I have to work tomorrow. Trouser Press Still tightly structured ("Repeat Defender" reveals serious King Crimson tendencies) but more open to daring discordance, sonic experimentation and meltdown cacophony, Don Caballero 2 rewrites the book with enthusiastic determination. What Burns Never Returns All Music Guide What Burns Never Returns is definitely something that has to be heard to be believed - and it could most definitely alter the way you think about music forever. Ink Nineteen Don Caballero's music exists squarely in the hazy realm between extreme chaos and bare order, and most other records sound a bit flat after a session with What Burns Never Returns. Pitchfork Sometimes when the moon is in its third Quarter, or when a cat is seen near a treestump, or when Uranus and Ganymede are lined up just right, I like a disc on the first listen. Nude as the News Singles Breaking Up, or at least its second half, will please any fan of What Burns Never Returns or any of Don Caballero's other brain-busting full-lengths. Pittsburgh Rock For those of you who know the Don Cab sound, you will be delighted in another fresh release full of great patterns but you will also thrill to the songs. Pop Matters American Don is quirky, intentionally repetitive, and more open to a few quiet moments than Caballero's previous CDs -- for readers who know this band's work. Wackiness.org "American Don" is Don Caballero's most experimental release to date. The songs tend to resort less to hard-rock guitar work and drum pummelings, and focus more on math-rock guitar work and more subdued drumming. |
